Why this Mechanics Institute?

In the 1880s, tram and train lines arrived in Brunswick, along with state schools and the Mechanics Institute. As centres of learning for working people, Mechanics Institutes fostered new ideas and policies that found their expression in Labor Governments over the next century.

Progressive politics is at a key point. The agenda of the 1990s has been implemented, and the legitimacy of the role of the State has been defended. What is next is a question that bears some asking. I won't answer it but I would like to comment of public policy issues in this space.

This space hopes to become one of thousands new places for the publishing of policy ideas to strengthen progressive politics - in Brunswick, Australia and globally.
